Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasounds are non-invasive scans in which sound waves are used to image the inside of the body. The most common forms of diagnostic ultrasounds are pelvis, abdomen, and Obstetric ultrasounds.

The sound waves are produced by a smooth hand-held device called a transducer, which can both emit and detect reflected sound waves. To prevent air pockets from forming, a warm contact gel is often applied to the skin to ensure a clear image is produced.

At South West Radiology, ultrasounds are conducted by our highly-trained sonographers, with the study generally taking between 20 and 30 minutes.

Digital X-Ray

Designed for assessing bone and soft tissues, an X-Ray passes low doses of radiation through the body, which are absorbed in order to produce a high-quality digital image. Due to its higher density, bone absorbs more radiation and appears white in the final image. Softer tissues such as organs allow more radiation to pass which present as grey areas.

Depending on the area of the body, a patient may need to stand or lie down in order to capture the best possible image.

CT Scans

A computed tomography scan, also known as a CAT scan, is a series of images taken using low-dose x-rays. These images are taken of thin sections across the area being scanned, sent to a computer, and collated into a detailed cross-section of internal structures.

Similarly to a loaf of bread, these cross-sectional images allow specialists to observe parts of the body including blood vessels, soft tissue, and bone.

Dental Imaging

At South West Radiology, our experienced specialists can perform two types of dental scans in order to identify possible dislocations, infections, or fractures. Lateral Cephalograms are precise scans taken of the face, in order to determine the relationship between the upper and lower jaw. In turn, this allows specialists to assess a patient’s bite.

Orthopantomograms (OPGs) are panoramic X-Rays of the mouth, teeth, maxilla (upper jaw), and mandible (lower jaw). Taking approximately 15 seconds, the scanner rotates around a patient’s head to create a two-dimensional image.

The specialists and technicians at South West Radiology offer a range of procedures including musculoskeletal injections, spinal injections, image-guided biopsies, and image-guided core biopsies.
