X-Rays

An X-Ray is a digital image produced using radiation to create images of bones and internal organs. The density of different tissues and body structures affects the volume of absorbed x-rays and the contrast shown on the final image. Bone absorbs a higher proportion of radiation while softer tissues allow more x-rays to pass through. As a result, bone appears white on the final image, soft tissue (organs, muscle, fat) appears grey, and air remains black.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are a non-invasive imaging technique using inaudible sound waves, undertaken by our highly-trained sonographers. All scans are conducted using a smooth hand-held device called a transducer which is moved across the surface of the skin. A warm contact gel will be applied to improve the transmission of the sound waves, ensuring a clear image.

Dental Imaging

Dental scans are recommended in order to identify potential infections, fractures, or dislocations. The highly-trained specialists at South West Radiology offer two types of scan to help assess a patient’s dentition.

Orthopantomograms are panoramic X-Rays taken of the teeth, jaw, and maxillary sinus. The OPG unit will rotate around the patient’s head, scanning from ear to ear in order to create a two-dimensional image.

Lateral Cephalograms scan the side of the face in order to determine the nature of a patient’s bite. This is done using precise positioning to assess the relationship between the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaw.

CT Scans

Using low-doses of radiation, scans are taken of the body which are then reconstructed by a computer into a detailed cross-sectional view. The series of images taken by x-rays collect information about internal structures including the blood vessels, bone, and soft tissues.

MRIs

An MRI is a non-invasive scanning method used to produce detailed images of the body using powerful magnetic fields and radio wave pulses. Patients will be required to lie on a padded table which will slide into the open-ended tunnel of the MRI machine.

Headphones/earphones will be provided in order to reduce the noise of the machine to a safe level. For comfort and convenience we can even provide access to our music & movie collection for the duration of the scan.
