Ultrasounds
Performed by our experienced sonographers, an ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique in which inaudible sound waves are used to create images. Using a hand-held device, known as a transducer, the sonographer will assess certain parts of the body. A contact gel is applied to the skin to eliminate air pockets and ensure that a clear image is captured by the ultrasound.
The most common types of procedure are pelvic and abdominal ultrasounds.
Obstetric Ultrasounds
An Obstetric ultrasound is used to assess the health and development of an unborn child. This type of scan is focused on the uterus, ovaries, and endometrium. Since no radiation is involved, ultrasounds are a safe and efficient way of checking on the progress of a pregnancy.
CT Scans
Computed tomography involves a series of scans taken across thin sections of the body. These multi-slice scans are taken using low-dose x-rays, collecting information about every internal structure at the same time.
Once the required scans have been taken, a computer combines them to create a detailed cross-sectional image showing blood vessels, bone, and soft tissue. The actual scanning time will generally take less than five minutes.
Digital X-Ray
X-Ray images are created through the absorption of radiation by bones and soft tissues. When a radiograph (X-Ray) is taken, much of the radiation is absorbed by dense bone while soft tissues allow more x-rays to pass through. As a result, bones appear white on the final image, soft tissue appears grey, and air remains black.
Dental Imaging
The specialists and technicians at South West Radiology offer dental scans to assess a patient’s jaw, mouth, and teeth. Used to identify and isolate potential infections, dislocations, or fractures, our dental scans can help get to the root of any issues.
Orthopantomograms (OPGs) use a scanner which rotates around a patient’s head. A panoramic X-Ray is taken from ear to ear, scanning the lower jaw, upper jaw, mouth, and teeth.
A Lateral Cephalogram is a scan of the side of a patient’s face, using precise positioning to determine the relationship between the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaw.
