Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds use inaudible sound waves to assess internal organs and other areas of the body. A hand-held device known as a transducer both emits and detects reflected sound waves, which allows an image to be produced. A warm contact gel is applied to the skin to optimise the transmission of sound waves by eliminating air pockets. This ensures that a clear image is captured.

CT Scans

Used to create a detailed cross-section of the body, CT scans involve a series of images taken using low-dose x-rays. These scans are collated and reconstructed by a computer to show the internal structures of the body including the soft tissues, blood vessels, and bone.

Each CT scan is tailored to the precise needs of the patient with the actual imaging process taking an average of five minutes to complete.

Dental

Our radiologists can provide two types of dental scan in order to identify potential fractures, dislocations, or infections. Physicians or dentists may also request diagnostics to aid in surgery planning.

Lateral Cephalograms are used to scan the side of the face to determine the relationship of the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaw. The precise positioning of the scan allows specialists to evaluate a patient’s bite.

An Orthopantomogram is a more extensive type of scan, creating an image of the teeth, jaw, and maxillary sinus. Taking approximately fifteen seconds, the scan involves the OPG unit rotating around the patient’s head to create a complete two-dimensional view.

MRIs

Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive scan which combines a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to produce a detailed image of the body. Located at our Campbelltown clinic, the MRI machine consists of a large cylinder with an open-ended tunnel in the centre. A padded bed, on which the patient will lie, slides into the tunnel during the procedure.

As the MRI can be quite noisy, patients are provided with earphones/headphones as well as a buzzer in case they wish to talk with the radiographers.

An MRI exam will generally take between 20 -30 minutes depending on how many images are needed.

South West Radiology collaborates with all referring physicians in order to provide exceptional care for every patient. We accept all types of referral including those supplied by private clinics and public hospitals.
