CT Scans

Computed tomography captures images of the body from multiple angles using low-dose x-rays, which are then reconstructed by a computer into a detailed cross-sectional view. In this way, radiologists and physicians can view information about internal structures including soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels. Each scan is tailored to the needs of the patient and the area in need of assessment. Patients will lie on the CT table which will move into the middle of the machine. This ensures that the area being scanned is in the optimal position. The scan itself will generally last less than five minutes.

A digital X-Ray is produced by passing radiation through the body, which is absorbed by certain tissues in varying amounts. Denser tissues, such as bone, absorb a higher proportion of radiation while soft tissues allow more of the x-rays to pass. This presents a contrast on the final image with bones showing white and softer tissues appearing grey.

Dental Imaging

In order to identify possible fractures, infections, dislocations, or problems with dentition, South West Radiology offers two types of dental scan.

Lateral Cephalograms are used to determine the relationship between the upper and lower jaw in order to assess a patient’s bite. This is done by scanning the side of the face using very precise positioning.

Performed using a specialised OPG unit, Orthopantomograms are panoramic dental X-Rays taken of the jaw, maxillary sinus, and teeth. The OPG machine rotates around the patient’s head, creating a two-dimensional view from ear to ear.

Ultrasounds are a non-invasive procedure performed without radiation in which images are produced using sound waves. Carried out by our highly-trained sonographers, ultrasounds involve the use of a hand-held transducer to emit and receive sound waves. This device is moved across the skin with sliding and rotating motions, in order to assess the body.

The most common types are abdominal, pelvic, and Obstetric ultrasounds.

At South West Radiology, our technicians offer a variety of bulk-billed injections and procedures to aid with diagnostics and pain relief. We can provide musculoskeletal injections, spinal injections, image guided biopsies, and image guided core biopsies.
