Dental Scans

The specialists at South West Radiology offer dental scans to determine any potential infections, fractures, or dislocations.

OPGs (Orthopantomograms) are X-Rays taken from ear to ear, scanning the upper and lower jaw, teeth, and maxillary sinus. Taking approximately 15 seconds, the OPG unit rotates around the patient’s head to produce a two-dimensional image.

A Lateral Cephalogram is a scan taken with precise positioning. Taken from the side, the scan determines the relationship between the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) to evaluate a patient’s bite.

CT Scans

Computed tomography scans use low-doses of radiation to assess areas of the body. These scans capture data in thin slices, reconstructed by a computer into a detailed cross-sectional image. These images can show internal structures including bone, soft tissue, and blood vessels.

We use Toshiba scanners for our CT scans in Chipping Norton.

Digital X-Ray

An X-Ray is a high-quality digital image produced by passing x-rays through the body. The radiation is absorbed by different internal structures in varying amounts. Bone absorbs a higher proportion of radiation compared to softer tissues. As a result, internal organs appear grey in the image while bones appear white.

Ultrasounds produce inaudible sound waves to assess various parts of the body. A hand-held device known as a transducer is moved across the skin in order to ‘see’ inside the body. Our highly-trained sonographers will apply a contact gel to the skin which aids in producing a clear image.

The most common procedures focus on the pelvic and abdominal regions. Obstetric ultrasounds are also performed in order to check on the health of unborn children.

MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) combine a strong magnetic field with radio-frequency pulses. Our MRI machine, located at our Campbelltown clinic, is shaped like an open-ended tube, with a padded table that slides into the tunnel when the scan begins.

The machine itself can be noisy throughout the procedure but earphones/headphones will be provided to reduce the volume to a safe level.

For pain-relief and diagnostics, South West Radiology provides a selection of bulk-billed procedures. These include spinal injections, image-guided biopsies, image-guided core biopsies, and musculoskeletal injections.
