CT Scans

Computed tomography (CT) involves a series of images captured using low-dose radiation and reconstructed by a computer. Tailored to the needs of the patient, the scans are taken from different angles, allowing the computer to create a detailed cross-sectional view. Radiologists and physicians can view information about internal structures including bone, soft tissues, and blood vessels.

MRIs are a safe and non-invasive procedure, producing detailed images without the use of radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field and radio pulses to take pictures of the inside of your body.

During the scan, undertaken at our Campbelltown clinic, the patient will lie on a padded table which slides into the open-ended tunnel of the MRI machine. Headphones/earphones will be provided for the procedure to minimise the volume of the machine, which can be quite noisy. Patients can even be provided with access to our music & movie collection throughout the scan.

Ultrasounds are a type of scan using inaudible sound waves to produce an image showing the inside of the body. Generally taking between 20-30 minutes, our trained sonographers move the hand-held transducer over the area being investigated. A warm contact gel may also be applied to streamline the transmission of sound waves.

The most common procedures are abdominal and pelvic, while Obstetric ultrasounds are available to assess the health of unborn children.

Digital X-Rays

A X-Ray is an image of bones and internal organs created by passing radiation through the body. The x-rays are absorbed in different amounts depending on the type of tissue encountered. Dense tissue, such as bone, retains a higher proportion of radiation while softer tissues absorb less. On the final scan, bone appears white while organs and other soft tissue appear grey.

Dental Scans

Our technicians and radiologists can assist with dental scans to identify any dislocations, fractures, infections, or problems with dentition. South West Radiology offers two types of dental imaging.

Orthopantomograms (OPG) are broad dental x-rays of the teeth, maxillary sinus, upper jaw, and lower jaw. The OPG will rotate around the patient’s head, creating a two-dimensional image from ear to ear.

Lateral Cephalograms use very precise positioning to scan the side of the face. This is done to determine the relationship of the upper and lower jaw in order to assess a patient’s bite.

The scans may be requested by a doctor or physician.

South West Radiology collaborates with referring physicians in order to provide comprehensive care for every patient. We accept all types of referral forms including those from public hospitals and private clinics.
